School Pride #2: Kisah Seorang Budak Sekolah Harian.

Take note, ini cerita sebelum tahun 2002.

But this is my natural hair color!" walaupun memang sah bukan.

..bitch," selepas kamu beredar.

"Haha, sometimes I forget you’re Malay lah."

Mungkin ini suatu advantage bagi aku. Mungkin tidak. Sebab mereka selalu sangat terlupa aku bukan Cina, mereka biasanya cakap lepas depan aku. Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

"Wei, did you see or not yesterday’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Damn stupid wan lah I tell you, that fella!"

"Ya hor, the 100 ringgit question oso he cannot get right!"

"Eh, you notice or not wan ah, when got Chinese in the show surely the question become so susah wan?"

"Ya lah! When Malay always the question kacang-kacang wan!"

"Because the Malays are so stupid lah!" dia berkata sambil ketawa berdekah-dekah, disambut dengan ketawa nervous oleh pengikut-pengikutnya yang bodoh. Tiga perempat dari kumpulan itu tidak ketawa. Mereka nampak seperti sangat ill at ease dan semuanya memandang aku. No one said a word.

I learnt a very important lesson that day.

Kalau tak, we’ll just leave it at that.

magenta,

Honestly speaking, inilah kali pertama saya mendengar cerita dari budak sekolah harian. For some reason, my sekolah harian friends tak pernah cerita apa-apa pun pasal sekolah mereka, ada pun sikit-sikit je lah macam little anecdotes of cerita kat kelas etc. Tapi takde yang pernah buat a summary so that i could get a picture of the situation.

Your comment on racism tu memang menarik, dan memang betul akan terpulang kepada semua individu untuk membuat kesimpulan sendiri, dan malangnya akan lebih ramai yang akan menggunakannya untuk confirm their own prejudices.

When i was working in PJ, I always hung out with the Chinese in my office. my evenings at the mamak or Sri Pandi were usually spent with the Chinese. I tried to hang out with the Malays, and there were 2 other Malay lady architects I usually had lunch with, but apart from that, I had trouble getting along with the Malay staff. Susah la kalau as soon as duduk je untuk makan mula bukak cerita mengumpat orang kan?

The thing about racism is that it's much easier to fire it up when you make no effort to talk to and befriend the Others. It's much tougher to exclude people based on their skin color and belief if these are the people you hang out with. I should know, my year at that office taught me that.

Even now, when I think about going to that office to visit the people there, in my head I picture going out for teh tarik and nasi daun pisang at Sri Pandi with the Chinese, takde pun terbayang muka-muka staff Melayu. Ada je Cina yang racist, tapi ignore je la orang-orang berfikiran sempit ni, they're just as bad as their Malay counterparts.

Memang terbukti bahawa warna kulit dan agama sahaja tidak menjamin bahawa you will get along well, this lesson continued for me in London. I only have a few select Malay friends sahaja in London, yang lain tu tak tau la kenapa susah betul nak masuk.

I find it easier to talk to people of the same wavelength and have similar interests regardless of agama dan warna kulit. If that person happens to be a Malay, well that's good but I won't bawl my eyes out if I can't get along with people of the same skin color and religion, buang masa je.

Do tell more about your experience as budak sekolah harian, I am very curious!

teruskan!

bagi saya kak magenta tersangatlah amat sungguh beruntung.

kakak saya dan abang saya pernah cakap dulu, 'Awak tak patut masuk mrsm, tengok, dah tak open minded'.

memang betul pun.

ikut flow lah katakan. kalau pesong sikit kene pulau.

tapi lama-kelamaan saya ikut kata hati : saya patut ikut arah bertentangan.

kalau orang kata duduk asrama boleh berdikari, iaitu boleh basuh baju sendiri dan tegang cadar sampai syiling boleh melantun, tak payahlah berbuih mulut nak merendahkan budak sekolah harian.

sekian, degan itu berakhirlah hujah saya.

same here. masa saye high school dulu kawan dgn budak cina, n they threw me a surprise birthday bash for my 17th, sungguh terharu.

the other malay kids labelled me and my sister "skema", sebab ambik pure science and duduk kelas 1st.

i remember during hockey practice, this one malay junior cakap, "aku taktau la brape subjek budak sains ambik. tula, sape suruh skema sangat!" haih. i felt like slapping her.

Whoa. I was always under the impression that your school's just filled with classists (can't think of proper word now, sorry :P), not racists. Maybe that only happens in private schools. Tapi token funny Indian guy did always exist throughout my schooling years and even college years. Heh.

A lot of my friends really did wear their school uniforms like how you described lah, regardless of their races. But they were also very active in sports. The ones who avoided the sun and sweating were the 'ayu' ones ler. ;)

I've only been in two schools my whole life, both private, but one of the main differences between the first and second was that in the former, those who speak English mainly got discriminated against, while in the latter, those who speak Mandarin/Cantonese mainly (yep, still majority Chinese) were looked down upon.

I believe these sentiments and prejudices sometimes come from the home. Dah biasa dengar mak bapa luahkan ketidakpuasan terhadap kaum lain, lepas tu dapat verification dari rakan-rakan lain yang juga dipengaruhi oleh orang dewasa, which results in victimisation of peers who're different from what they are. Malay, Chinese, Indian, rich, poor, lawyer, cleaner, straight, gay, you get the idea. ;)

but yeah, please sambung your cerita tentang bangku sekolah! :D

side note: what does skema mean ah? :P

racism sucks. it really does, but it's here to stay for a long time.

i think it'll be unbelievably better if malaysians were to start thinking of themselves as individuals first than anything else.

and in my opinion, within the malaysian sheep-ish culture, being a little individualistic will do a lot of good.

once a malaysian is able look at and appreciate him/herself as an individual, he/she will be able to appreciate another person for who the other person is instead of what race that person is (notice the usage of 'is' instead of 'belongs to' - i truly think we don't belong to anything, unless we choose to).

from my life experience, i dare say that there are malaysians who carry this kind of mindset, but currently they're the minority. i hope one day, i'll be able to see this minority mindset seeps its way into the majority.

anyhow, great post.

haha, aku tergelak bila baca "Untuk membawa baju Pendidikan Jasmani, mereka suka gunakan beg kertas Guess dan yang seangkatan dengannya."

teringat pula waktu aku sekolah dulu, hari ada subjek pj, budak perempuan selalu bawa beg kertas. beg plastik tak main.

budak lelaki selalu bawa beg but adidas, untuk simpan baju sukan.

aku? simpan dalam beg sekolah sudah. tiada beg but mahupun beg kertas.

btw, moar!

Sekolah asrama pun ada racism gak. Mcm antara org jawa dgn Banja ker. Melayu dgn proto.

ahh...yes..speaking cantonese or any othr dialects to exclude u.i would know that very well.

nurul: Tu lah. Bukan nak cakap I've never gossiped at all in my life, tapi kadang2 dengan sesetengah orang macam tak ada cerita lain je. Lagi-lagi yang malicious and bergosip just to feed their insecurities. I'd always encourage people to befriend other races just because there are certain things that you just won't experience or learn by just mixing with your own race/group. Tapi some people tend to think this means I encourage them to forget their roots lah, their values lah, their religion lah. Apa kehaenya.

takahara: Ha. Saya selalu tertanya, kenapa kalau 'lain' sikit mesti kena pulau? Diorang mahu semua orang jadi macam biri-biri ke. Seorang buat, semua ikut. Kita orang Melayu. Kita orang kreatif. Kenapa nak sekat sifat kreatif tu?

risingcloud: Hahaha, patut jawab apa tau? "Too many subjects for you to count, because apparently you don't know what comes after 10." :p

chen: Hahaha tunggu dulu, I haven't finished my story. :p They are the things you mentioned.

Eh, I guess the kids at my school were ayu la then? Haha!

Skema tu, I myself pun not sure, I think macam 'nerd' or goody two shoes' ikut slang Melayu, tapi desperate housewife punya definition dekat komen di atas lagi tepat.

dayana: Hehe ok.

desperate housewife: Haha I guess I'll continue the story then.

zureen: Haha! If all racists kena pancung, I doubt we would be left with much.

farizzet: Haha learn to curse in both languages.

47: Thanks. I hope bila our generation breeds, kita takkan poison our kids' minds with this sentimen perkauman. It has to stop sometime, seriously.

tacgnol: Hahaha. Aku pernah bawak beg plastik Fajar (kedai macam Giant) untuk bawak baju PJ sekali. Semua orang pandang macam aku ni gila.

siberkop: Iyeke? Hmm, nampaknya manusia ni cari alasan je nak gaduh. Proto tu apa?

Bahaya tu.

anonymous: Yeah. Diskriminasi betul kan. Sebab I have friends who were Chinese and tak reti cakap Mandarin/Cantonese jugak. Diorang pun turut blur masa budak-budak ni berbual.

frankly, i only have a few close friends who aren't malay, plus the usual group of people i hang out with do throw racist remarks around, considering we're all of the same race.

being in an SBP didn't help either. even the teachers spread the so-called "propaganda ketuanan melayu" in class. heh.

i feel lucky that i'm now working at a legal firm, because when i follow my boss around, i do get to see that even in working life, racism happens all the time and there's nothing you can do except turn a blind eye and try to do your job the best possible.

oh and please do continue your stories. haha.

I believe everyone is racist by default as a human. The only difference is how racist u r and this is influenced by things like upbringing, exposure, social interaction and etc.The fact that u get offended by a racist remark itself shows that u have the racial sentiment. Its a human nature, we all need a side to belong to in the end, especially when u get caught up in a situation like that.Don't get me wrong, i am no racist prick, i have friends from all skin color, black, white brown green blue and i dont hate any race, i just despise those who make overgeneralized comments on certain races like melayu bodoh, malas and chinese smart, intelligent and etc regardless of their race.

nurulazreenazlan said...

well then anonymous,

there are arguments that say we are not born human, we become human.

maybe it's man's natural instinct to take side with people of his own creed, as it is usually taken for granted that having similar background means that communication will be easier. but that doesn't mean that he will automatically be suspicious of others. this suspicion is something that is borne out of the environment he grows up in.

being offended by racist remarks means that a person is aware of the negative connotation it bears, and that doesn't make one racist. when one doesn't feel affected by a racist remark and hence think that it is something acceptable, then that is the mark of a racist.

i am racist too. i have my prejudices. and sometimes things happen that confirm my prejudice, but it is essential that i remember that people are people, and one person differs from the other. it is important to look at a person as an individual.

it's good to know that you are no racist prick =)

Great post anonymous. Too many pseudo anglicised and english educated malays have forgotten the basic. There are no non racist people out there in the world. The so called non racist people are losers tricked into believing that there is such a thing as living in a vacuum.

The world is defined by the strongest and the meek like iqanabare try to be accepted by believing that she is one of them. Easier to mislead yourself that you help define the world by being so called non-racist and hope to be accepted by the english whose world she live in her uninvited mind.

Tak tahu buat kawan mcm Nurul pun nak salahkan Melayu.

Or erm, who kesian his chinese mechanics. Such noble feelings.

Baru tahu langit tinggi rendah.

Its harder to fight for the malays. To promote ketuanan melayu kerana ia satu perjuangan yang sukar. Memerlukan pengorbanan dan keberanian. Memerlukan pertumpahan darah. Lebih senang hidup dalam make believe world of non-racist bukan?

From one anonymous to another...cheers!

iqanabeera: Yeah, when you're working baru you get to see the big picture.

And yupe, will do. Hehe.

siberkop: Yeke? Argh. Aku lambat pikap lawak asrama.

freakmie: Hahaha tak kot. Thanks.

anonymous: Well, I believe we were born a blank canvas. And just like Nurul said, it's the things in our environment that mould us to become who we are. I sort of agree with your remark that everyone being a racist, it must be true to a certain extent. Just like how I believe everyone judges everyone else, the only difference is to what extent do we judge?

nurul: Nicely put!

erm: I like the way you answered to the anonymous who bashed you.

pakali and MM: Hahaha thanks. :)

anonymous: There is a way to convey information to people, and you are not doing it right. Being bitter, overcritical and calling people names is definitely not the way to do it.

I believe Iqanabeera did not mention anything about being accepted by the English. She was merely stating her experiences abt working in a firm in Malaysia. And I believe what she said are relevant to this post.

In fact, I believe Nurul's and erm's comments are totally relevant to the post while your comment isn't. Here you are rambling abt Singapore and China while the issue here is Malaysia. Because we are in Malaysia. And I do believe it is people like you who will add sparks to the fire that is already there.

Why are we talking abt pengorbanan and pertumpahan darah? Listen to yourself. This is not 1969.

Kamu mahukan peperangan over a bloody race? I'm sorry, but nasionalism must the stupidest excuse for a war that I can think of. There are bigger things in life.

hye.
heh.cool gile.
spent most of my time today just to read ur blog-fascinating! (:

raised up some questions in my mind, and others too,no doubt about it.u made people to think the rational of you talking about sth evendo for certain, they found it offensive.

racist-undeniable existence..

put it in this way.

in my clg, malays hangout dgn malays.rare to c them hangout with chns peeps,or even d indian :(

chns ppl pulak, they usually lepak with the chns(obviously) and plus, the indians as well.

konklusi.

chns + indian = sama2 kawan

malays on the other side pulak macam dah mark ,this is a malay territory.

i'm not saying that malays dont mingle around with others but they tend to be friend with mreke yg sebangsa.it's their comfortable zone.

and what's more to add up is that, chns and indians overhere, they're all superb.u can see clearly the way they think, the way they take sth,the way the finish up any assgmnts, any tasks..

most of them work in a very very professional way and even in classes jugak the malays always feel inferior with them.and why is that so?because they normally managed to score highest marks, they're the one who performed, they're the one who berani to bercakap in class.malays banyak diam je coz they think their english are bad and it's better for them to be quite and pretend to understand what the heck the teachers r teaching in front.they prefer to communicate in malays and keep in silent mode when it comes to english conversation.
how to improve if they're still like this till the end maa?

sometimes i love to hangout with the chns n indians dudes coz they're so cool.if u'r in troubles, they'll help u.mintak tolong sikit mesti mereka tolonglah.tp if we look at the malays side,kadang2 to help ur own bestfriend kite hesitate.this is what i can c based on my own personal observation.

melayu kene berubah.we need to step out from our comfortable zone and try to mix around.when we do this, kita akan dapat see things in different angle which will help us in our life.sebab oranag kate,if kite kwn ngan malay jek,we'll be only exposed to the way how malays think, but when we'v become friends with the others, bukankah lebih membantu?

and kite pon takkan rugi apape.Diorag xmkn kite pon.and the are willing to share anything with u as long as we consider them as our friends too.

malaysian kena bersatu padu :)

magenta said...

gray: I know how to deal with people like that - give them a taste of their own medicine. If you can't tell them that it bugs you, do the same thing back to them. Macam, say "No offence la.." then kutuk her race, and when you're done smile sweetly at her dengan muka innocent. Kalau dia melenting, remind her that she does the same thing all the time.

jumpjumpjump: SAS bukan sekolah lelaki ke?

anonymous: Yeah, yeah.

deathidoo: Hi there.:)

Thanks for dropping a comment. Yeah, I agree that we need to mix around to get a bigger prespective, get out of our comfort zones and see the bigger picture. For one, we all could start by being less suspicious of one another.

And yes, racism exists. What do we do? Ignore it, pretend like it doesn't exist and continue living under suspicion of other races? Or do we bring it out to the open and discuss it even though some people might find it offensive? This is a big issue, regardless of whether people want to acknowledge it or not. And I chose the latter.

WHAT A BULLSHIT CONCEPT.

You can thank whatever feelings or acts of racism but the poor way you were brought up. Blame your parents for teaching you discrimination. Blame them for having inferiority complex and imposing their supicions against you.

By the way, in this day and age, nobody owns anybody else. Ketuanan melayu my foot. I see Melayu licking Chinese ass all the time, dressing like them, trying to mix with them, trying to whiten their face to look like them, trying to marry into the race so the kids will look more Chinese and fair, ketuanan melayu you say? Hah. Sudahla puji komen sendiri. Tak sedar diri!

Oh, and wipe that brown smudge off your nose.

I don't believe this is the case here.

ya aku juga tahu bilamana kita dah btul2 rapat, lawak interracial tidak akan menjadi hal tp.. apa maksud benar2 rapat kt cni?! berkawan baik? rakan karib? sahabat sejati? aku tak nmpk apa yg terjadi ketika tu boleh dikelaskan sbg perhubungan yg benar2 rapat! bukan?

jgn slh phm ya, aku cuma mmberi pndpt..

Tumpanglalu: Aku tak tau, aku tak terlibat dalam melawak macamtu :p

Macam aku tulis kat atas, mungkin keinginan mereka untuk fit in terlalu kuat sehingga mereka tak kisah kepala mereka dipijak.

chenaD: Tak, saya tak bitchy. Haha. Cerita pasal sekolah harian ni dah lama tamat, hehe.
